Viking Junior Amy Aho was medalist for the meet. Aho had two sevens, but other than that played a good, steady round of golf that included three pars. Her putting saved her on several occasions.
Teammate Lacee Scherer was next with a 50. Scherer hit two balls out of bounds which contributed to two of her three sevens. Outside of that, she carded nothing worse than a bogey. Once she starts to control those errant tee shots, Scherer is going to bring in some low numbers.
Hope Chenevert had a 55, despite two eights on her scorecard. The rest of her round featured some very steady golf, including pars on both par threes. Chenevert has been a real bright spot for the Vikings, thus far.
Jeni Farr’s 58 was a better round than the score would indicate. She had a nine on the trouble ridden number three and two sevens. Aside from that, she played good golf.
Those four scores combined for the Vikings’ total of 210. Kelsey Johnson and Katie Foley also played varsity for the Vikings. Both had some big holes and are working through some early season swing errors. When they correct them, their scores will help North Branch record some lower scores.
At St. Louis Park
The Vikings played St Louis Park at beautiful Theodore Wirth Park Tuesday, April 18. The result was a 204 to 229 win over the Orioles.
Lacee Scherer was the hot golfer for North Branch in this meet as her 44 earned medalist honors. Scherer’s round included two sixes and a raft of fours and fives. Her round was highlighted by a 250 yard drive on number six.
Amy Aho was second with a 49. Aho’s best shot of the day also came on number six. With the skyline of downtown Minneapolis in the background, she stuck her wedge approach shot from 100 yards within a few feet of the flag. The shot was especially impressive because of her lie, deep in the left hand rough.
Kelsey Johnson showed some life in the meet by carding a 55 despite a nine and an eight. She’s working hard to try to straighten her tee shots and it started to pay off at the scenic Wirth course.
Eighth grader Katie Foley had her best round of the young season by recording a 56. Her play was more consistent than her first few, with nothing higher than a seven on the scorecard.
Jeni Farr (58) and Hope Chenevert (61) completed the varsity scores for the Vikings.
The 204 was closer to the team’s goal of scoring under 200 on a consistent basis. This was only the second meet for the Vikings and already all six players have contributed to the team’s two wins.
The Vikings play at the Purple Hawk Invitational Monday, April 24 at 12:30 pm and at Chisago Lakes Wednesday, April 26 at 3:30.
