Wildcat boys hockey celebrates end of year with banquet honoring team
“I feel fortunate to go to work every day and work with the kind of kids I want to work with. And I’m proud of our kids for staying with their home program through high school. We get a chance to enjoy the game we love as a team. And, hopefully, it helps us learn how to perform in class, out in the community and in life,” coach McKinnon continued.
“This is the second year we’ve given out the Hobey Baker Award, which goes to the player on the team who best exemplifies the qualities of character, sportsmanship, skill, academic success and personal achievement. Lance Baumgard is well deserving of this award. Lance also earned academic all-conference honors.”
The coach said, “One of our team goals before the season was to have a team GPA of A- of better. An A- GPA is 3.33 and our GPA for the year was 3.37. In addition to meeting our goal, we won the team academic all-conference award. I’m really proud of our guys for that.
McKinnon announced that assistant coach Tim Lideen had resigned as of the end of the season. “We’ll certainly miss Tim,” said McKinnon. “But he’s agreed to help us in some capacity next year. My other assistant, Josh Scharnberg, turned out to be a perfect fit for our hockey team this year. He’s honest and he really helped the kids learn about the game of life. And I don’t want to forget the parents. Part of the reason for our success is that our kids are supported by a great group of parents.”
McKinnon talked about each of his seniors. “Lance Baumgard overcame illness and injury to have a great season. We’ll miss his leadership qualities. Jimmy Bergren always work as hard as he could to get the most out of his experience. He was a great captain. CJ Hoffman improved his play and level of maturity from last year. His goal was to get four kids on the other team scared every game, and I think he did well at that. Zack Stimson was a competitor, plain and simple. And he had a lot of speed – I don’t think I ever saw anyone catch him from behind. He was a good leader and an opponent other teams didn’t want to face. And Forrest Lamson didn’t play much varsity, but he stepped up there and performed well when we asked him to. And he was always the first one to the rink for practice and the last one to leave.”
