The Chisago Lakes girls’ golf team took advantage of a beautiful spring day and home course advantage to win its opening meet Tuesday April 11. The Wildcats beat the Irondale Knights 211-218.

“It was great to start the season off with a win,” said Chisago Lakes coach Jeanne Hawkinson. Irondale’s Katie Bolling was the medalist with a 43, but the balance of the CL team provided the margin of victory.

Krista Liebsch was low for the Wildcats with 51. Jaime Tschida and Melissa Ubel were next for the ‘Cats with 53’s. Krista Swanson’s 54 completed the team total. Jenna Merry and Megan Corradi each came in with 57’s to complete the roster.

“I was pleased that the girls’ scores were consistent as a team. If we always have the choice of six good scores, we will be okay this year. The girls have the potential to be fairly strong as a team,” Hawkinson added.

Chisago Lakes vs Fridley

Monday, April 17 the Wildcats played at the National Youth Golf Center against Fridley.  Chisago Lakes won 205 to 235.

Scores were:  Jenna Merry 47 (medalist), Krista Liebsch 51, Krista Swanson 53, Megan Corradi 54, Melissa Ubel 58, and Mesa LaValley 68.

The win came without Jaime Tschida, currently the team’s number one player. “But the team pulled together and played well.  I was excited to see Jenna back in the forties.  I expect her to only improve--she loves to play,” said Hawkinson.

“Liebsch has been steady at 51--it seems to be her number, but I can see her cracking into the forties in the near future--she's got a great swing.  Swanson really came through for us. She just keeps getting lower and lower scores.  She is a big help to the team--always in there.  Corradi is coming back, too.  She started the season rough, but is finding her swing again.  It helps that she is such a great athlete,” the coach continued.

“The conditions were very windy and we were on a links-type course.  It was a challenge. I was very proud of the girls, not only because they played well, but because it was a new course and opponent--we didn’t know what to expect,” Hawkinson added.

The Wildcats were scheduled to play at the Purple Hawk Invitational Monday, April 24 and host Cooper Tuesday, April 25 and North Branch Wednesday, April 26 at 3:30.
