Columbia Heights Triangular

The Wildcats won both matches in the Columbia Heights Triangular Thursday, December 7. They thrashed St. Croix Lutheran 54-27, and then needed two late pins to squeak by Columbia Heights 41-38 in the nightcap.

Against St. Croix Lutheran, the Wildcats won nine of 14 individual matches, including six pins. JD Ford’s pin with 55 seconds remaining in the 160-pound match sealed the win for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats trailed Columbia Heights 38-29 going into the final two weights. Both Troy Montague at 215 and Tony Gall at 275 pinned their opponents to give the Wildcats the 41-38 victory.

“That was an exciting way to wrap up the win, said Wildcat head coach Shawn Frederixon. “We knew we had a great chance to win this one, but we needed pins to win at the end and Troy and Tony came through for us. Tony’s had a really good early season, and we look for more big things from him this year.”

Prior Lake Tournament

The Wildcats finished fifth out of 10 teams at the Prior Lake Tournament Saturday, December 9. They had nine wrestlers finish sixth or higher, with three of those athletes – Travis Kammerer, Mitch Anderson and Cameron Gilliam – earning second place finishes.

“This was Travis’ first time wrestling at 112 this year,” said Wildcat head coach Sean Frederixon. “He had been wrestling as a light 125-pounder. Now he’s definitely at a weight where he can be more successful.

“Mitch did an outstanding job,” continued Frederixon. “In fact, he wrestled well enough to win the tournament. Cameron, our transfer from Woodbury, had a nice first tournament. And John Hogie had a good tournament. His one loss was to a kid who’s ranked second in the state.
