Wildcat wrestlers Mitch Anderson, Dan Gemuenden and Bobby Ferrier each went 3-0 on the day. Anderson had three pins and Gemuenden had two pins. In the match against the Mustangs, Ferrier beat a 2004-2005 state entrant who beat him last year. The Mustang wrestler was ahead going into the third period and Ferrier took him down a couple of times to take the lead and earn the victory.
Chad Stenson went 2-1 on the day. John Hogie also won two of three matches, including the 25th pin of his career, against Mounds View. Kelby Kowalenko was 2-1 with two pins. “Kelby has been on and off the varsity all year,” said Wildcat head coach Shawn Frederixon, “so it was good to see him get some wins today.”
“We almost did it with 6 wins against Sibley,” said Frederixon. We put ourselves in a good position, but couldn’t quite finish it off.”
The victory over Mounds View was the Wildcats’ 18th of the season, surpassing the record of 17 set just last season. The Wildcats have a good chance to reach the 20-victory mark as they have four regular season matches remaining this season.
“We had some hard-fought matches against Mounds View,” said Frederixon. “Bobby getting the win over the state entrant was huge. And a couple of the wrestlers who lost wrestled hard to each save a point for us, giving us our one-point margin of victory.
At 125 pounds, Mitch Anderson fought off his back to avoid a pin and lost five points for a technical fall instead of the six points for a fall. And Troy Montague trailed 10-2 late in his match, which would have meant a major decision and a loss of four points. But Montague got two takedowns to bring the match to 10-6, losing by decision and a loss of just three points. That point was enough to assure us of the win. Any time you have the opportunity to gain an extra point or avoid losing one against an opponent, you do it, and that was certainly evident in the Mounds View match today,” the coach stated.
The Wildcats were scheduled to travel to Rush City to face the Aitkin Gobblers and the Rush City Tigers at a triangular Tuesday, January 31. And they return home tonight, Thursday, February 2, to take on the Irondale Knights in a North Suburban Conference matchup at Chisago Lakes High School at 7:30 p.m.
