CL girls hockey completes conference at 8-4
Ready to face Cambridge-Isanti in first round of section 7AA
In a preview of tonight’s section playoff game, the Chisago Lakes/Pine City Wildcats girls’ hockey team outshot the Cambridge-Isanti Bluejackets 42-21, but had to settle for a 2-2 tie. The game was Tuesday, January 31 at Pine City Arena.
The Bluejackets scored the only goal of the first period. The Wildcats tied it up near the end of the second period on a goal by Rhiannon Sauter, assisted by Lexy Parenteau, and took the lead on an unassisted goal by Annie Fredrickson early in the third period. It looked like the Wildcats would hang on for the victory. But the Bluejackets pulled their goalie with a minute remaining and scored with 24 seconds left. Neither team managed a goal in overtime and the Wildcats ended up with a disappointing 2-2 tie.
Chisago Lakes/Pine City 3, Totino Grace 0
The Wildcats played their best game of the year last Friday, February 3, shutting down Totino Grace Eagles star Anna McDonald while shutting out the Eagles 3-0 at Chisago Lakes Arena.
Ariel Novak got the Wildcats on the board just four minutes into the first period. She ripped a slapshot from the left point through heavy traffic. The goalie never saw the puck as it got inside the left post to put the Wildcats up 1-0.
Later in the period, the Eagle goalie came out to challenge Rhiannon Sauter's shot. The puck rebounded at an odd angle and Jenny Wolfe one-timed it into the net to put the Wildcats, who outshot the Eagles 42-15 for the game, up by two.
Sauter scored the third and final goal of the contest at 6:59 of the second period. Sauter took the puck down the left side, walked in and fired the puck off the right post and in. The Wildcats continued to frustrate the Eagles after that, shutting them down for the rest of the game to make the final score Chisago Lakes/Pine City 3, Totino Grace 0.
“I’m very proud of the girls,” said Wildcat head coach Al Magnuson. “They played a total game tonight. They played well for all 51 minutes. It’s the best game I’ve ever seen Rhiannon Sauter play. The defense positioned themselves well, played solid basic defense and shut McDonald down tonight. And Jackie Weiden made some nice saves to earn her shutout.”
“The third line played out of their minds tonight,” said assistant coach Jim Gawreluk. “For the team to go into sections playing this well is huge.”
SECTION PREVIEW
The Wildcats were seeded number two in the section. They’ll open play tonight, Thursday, February 9, at Chisago Lakes Arena at 7:30 against the seventh-seeded Bluejackets.
“If we play solid for the whole game, like we did against the Eagles, we should be able to beat Cambridge in our first section game,” Magnison commented.
If the Wildcats do beat the Bluejackets, their next game will be Saturday, February 11 at the Cambridge-Isanti Arena at 7 p.m. against the winner of the game between third-seeded Grand Rapids and sixth-seeded Hermantown.
