The Chisago Lakes Wildcats girls hockey team outshot the Robbinsdale Cooper Hawks 45-7 on its way to a 6-0 victory at Chisago Lakes Arena Tuesday, January 10.
The Wildcats scored two goals in each period, with Lexy Parenteau and Rhiannon Sauter getting two goals apiece. In the third period, Kristin Dobosenski scored her first varsity goal. The rebound from Krista Liebsch’s shot came straight up the slot and Dobosenski swooped in and fired the puck through the Hawk goalie’s five-hole to make the score 5-0. Ariel Novak added an unassisted goal on a nice move later in the period to make the final score Chisago Lakes 6, Cooper 0.
Goalies Jackie Weiden and Erica Pitzen combined for the shutout, with Pitzen playing the third period for the first varsity action of her career. “Erica’s batting a thousand,” said Wildcat head coach Al Magnuson.
St. Francis/North Branch 3, Chisago Lakes/Pine City 2
The Wildcats fell behind by three goals early in the game and their comeback fell just short as they lost to St. Francis/North Branch (SFNB) 3-2 at East Bethel Arena Thursday, January 12.
SFNB scored all of its goals in a two-and-a-half minute span of the first period. University of Minnesota recruit Alexandra Zebro put SFNB on the board at the seven-minute mark. SFNB scored again after Wildcat defender and Bemidji State recruit Lexy Parenteau was tripped in front of the Wildcat net. As Parenteau slid out of the way, SFNB took advantage of the opening and scored its second goal of the game. They added another goal 30 seconds later for a 3-0 lead.
The Wildcats, who outshot SFNB 35-16 for the game, ramped up the intensity after that. They were rewarded on the power play at the 4:44 mark of the second period. Rhiannon Sauter fired the puck out of the corner to Parenteau charging up the slot and Parenteau one-timed it past SFNB goalie Alicia Wessel to pull the Wildcats within two. The Wildcats got one goal closer at the beginning of the third period. This time, it was Ariel Novak feeding a charging Parenteau for Parenteau’s second goal of the game. But, the Wildcats couldn’t manage another goal and the final score remained SFNB 3, Chisago Lakes 2.
“We couldn’t finish off our shots early,” said Wildcat assistant coach Jim Gawreluk. “After they scored their goals, we owned them, but we couldn’t quite tie it up. This loss was tough because it was a section loss and a four point loss in the conference.”
Chisago Lakes/Pine City 3, Duluth East 0
The Wildcats rebounded from their loss to SFNB with an impressive 3-0 shutout of Duluth East at Pioneer Hall in Duluth Saturday, January 14.
The Wildcats got on the board in the first period on a nice wraparound goal by Annie Fredrickson. The ‘Cats scored on the power play in the second period as Morgan Baumgard passed the puck to Rhiannon Sauter in the left corner. Sauter fired the puck out of the corner to a streaking Parenteau, who one-timed it past the Duluth East goalie to make the score 2-0. The Wildcats added their final score on a beautiful play. Baumgard fed Fredrickson and Fredrickson skated into the zone and left a drop pass for Sauter. Sauter one-timed it in to make the final score Chisago Lakes 3, Duluth East 0.
“Our goalie, Jackie Weiden, played a good game and deserved the shutout,” said Gawreluk. “The play was pretty good back and forth between the teams and she came up with some big saves. And, freshman Krista Liebsch stepped up big for us. We were without one of our starting defenders, Kate Boynton, so Liebsch got her first start as a varsity defender, paired up with Lexy Parenteau. Liebsch played a solid game, as did eighth-grader Sam Lorr.”
The Wildcats (12-7-0 overall, 6-1-0 conference) have another big week ahead of them. They were scheduled to play at section opponent Duluth Denfeld Tuesday, January 17. They’ll play conference leader and fourth-ranked (in Class AA) Benilde-St. Margaret’s (15-2-0. 5-0-0) this Saturday, January 21 at St. Louis Park Arena at 3:30 p.m.
