The warm weather and hot bite continues on area lakes
The additional leg-work and time required to get on and off the lakes has been overshadowed by the fact that the fishing continues to be quite good on the Chain of Lakes, as well as other bodies of water within Chisago County. This will sound remarkably similar to past reports, and I assure that I’m not taking shortcuts here, but the fish continue to actively feed in the same old tried-and true spots. Chisago Lake, from the eagle nest south to Co. Rd. 83, is still one of the “go to” spots for numbers of sunfish and crappies. There have been reports of some nice crappies caught in the south bay (up to 10.5 –inches!). Also, the west side of Pancake Island and the “saddle” between Sunset and Park Points continues to be very productive. The west side of the island on North Center Lake has also been dynamite for limits of panfish. Anglers hanging shiners and suckers under tip-ups for northerns and bass in and around all of these panfish spots while jigging have enjoyed consistent success.
The word from Dick at Frankie’s Bait is that area lakes have 12-inches of ice. That’s certainly adequate for walking, four-wheeling and snowmobiling, and I’d have no qualms about driving on 12-inches of clear ice any other year, but this year, with the funny weather we’ve experienced, you couldn’t pay me to drive out there yet. As I mentioned before, I’ve fallen through ice near shorelines a couple of times in the past, and it ain’t fun. Besides, I really need the exercise.
