Saturday, January 14, the Chisago Lakes boys’ swimming and diving team achieved one of its goals by qualifying for the State True Team Meet. It did so by earning 450 points at the Section 2A True Team Meet at Spring Lake Park High School. Monticello was second with 401 and Spring Lake Park third with 306.
“After not swimming very well at Benilde, they swam really well on Saturday,” said Wildcat head coach Jim Sauerbry referring to his teams performance. “Of the 92 total swims on Saturday, 51 were season personal bests.”
Highlights for the Chisago team included Andy Willhite’s first place in diving and Luke Spehar’s first in the butterfly. First, second, third and sixth place finishes in diving and the overall performances by the relay teams showed the depth of the team.
Hunter Heggerston took second in the 50 and 100 freestyles. Steve Boo was third in the 200 and 500 freestyles. Mark Eagan came in fourth in the 200 IM and the breast stroke and Tom McGurk was second in the breast stroke and fifth in the IM.
“Most of the other teams in our section don’t have large enough teams to compete in this type of meet. It is exactly the kind of meet that showcases our strength,” Sauerbry explained.
State True Team Meet
Saturday, January 21
“Getting to go to the meet was the preseason goal. Not getting 10th out of the top 10 ten teams in the state was the immediate goal,” said Chisago Lakes head swimming and diving coach Jim Sauerbry.
To get there, the Wildcats needed their relay teams to come through.
“Going into the last relay, we were trailing Monticello by 10 points, so we needed all of our relays to swim well and they did. Our A 10th place, B 22nd, C29th, and D 33rd, compared to Monticello A 5th, B 26th, C 34th and D 39th,” Sauerbry continued.
The end result was that the Wildcats passed Monticello and moved into ninth place with 969 points compared to Monticello’s 959. St. Thomas Academy won the event with 1780 points. Red Wing (1441) and Fergus Falls (1367) were second and third.
The best event for the Chisago team was diving. Andy Willhite was sixth, Tom McCulloch eighth, Cody Gralish ninth and Charlie Kopp 13th.
Other highlights for the Wildcats included the butterfly, where Luke Spehar finished seventh. Kevin Roggeman, Cameron Novak and David Donahue all had personal bests in the ‘fly.
Steve Boo had a personal best in the 200 freestyle and the 500 free. Hunter Heggerston and Joey Swanson had personal bests in the 100 freestyle. Andrew Turner and Andrew Jokinen also had personal bests in the 500 free.
Tom McGurk, Willhite and Tyler Schuler all had personal bests in the individual medley. John Donahue was 16th in the backstroke and Gralish and Novak had personal bests. Mark Eagan and McGurk finished in the top 20 in the breast stroke and Schuler had a personal best in the same event.
Congratulations to the team and coaches Sauerbry and Willhite.

Chisago Lakes teams won all three relay events. J. Donahue, McGurk, Spehar and H. Heggerston won the 200 medley relay in 1:52.07. Swanson, Gralish, D. Willhite and Boo took first in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:40.73 and the 400 relay team (D. Willhite, Spehar, Boo and H. Heggerston) won in 3:42.24. Wildcat teams also took second and third in the medley relay, second in the 400 and third in the 200.
“We had only a couple of personal bests, but really weren’t expecting times to be dropping at this part of the season. We’re building up our yardage in practice, hoping to make our year-end taper more effective,” said Wildcat head coach Jim Sauerbry.
