Wildcat and Viking golfers in section meet at Eagle Ridge
The golf course, built on the bluffs overlooking beautiful Trout Lake, provided a challenging track for players from schools ranging from the northern Twin Cities suburbs to Iron Range schools such as Hibbing.
The three teams with the lowest team total scores qualify for a second day of competition, also at Eagle Ridge, on Memorial Day. The second day scores are combined with the first day’s totals to determine the Section 7AA entrant in the state tournament.
In the individual portion of the tournament, all golfers who score within five strokes of the five lowest individual scores (excluding the scores of the first place team). Like the team totals, players’ scores for the two days are combined to determine which five players qualify for the individual competition at the state tournament.

INDIVIDUAL RESULTS
BOYS
Grand Rapids’ Matt Schneider was the first day leader with a 71. Tim Peterson (Elk River) was next with a 74. Wildcats Luke Angrimson 78, Scott Liebsch 82 and Aron Duren 84 qualified for the second day of the Tournament.
“Luke has a pretty good shot at qualifying for the next level of competition. He is in a position to make it if he plays consistent. Scott and Aron are also capable of shooting low and could do well,” said Wildcat coach John Hawkinson.

North Branch Boys
“The only way we’re going to get better is to get out and play. We need to spend a lot of time practicing this summer if we’re going to improve on our performance this year. These kids are very nice, smart kids, but they’re going to have to dedicate themselves to golf,” said North Branch coach Tom Moriarty.

GIRLS
Hillary Gerster (Andover) and Laura Heck (Hibbing) shot 79 to share honors for the day. This year, in order to earn a trip back for day two, girls had to shoot 90 or lower. Amy Aho had a 94 to lead the Vikings. Krista Liebsch and Megan Corradi carded 97’s for the Wildcats.
CL head coach Jeanne Hawkinson said, “The girls were somewhat disappointed with their rounds. They played well for their practice round and had a positive outlook going into the tournament. Unfortunately, we don't have a lot of 18 hole tournament experience under our belts and it could have played a factor in how we performed.
“Overall I was happy. They shot around their season average or even better. They continue to improve and stay steady. Our time will come. They are still a young team. We will miss Jenna Merry next year, but we are lucky to only be losing one girl. We’ll continue to set goals and work hard to meet them,” Hawkinson added.

North Brnch Girls
Amy Aho played very consistent golf. She has the most consistent, controlled swing on the team and it helped to keep her out of trouble at Eagle Ridge. Kelsey Johnson played 16 holes very well, but two big holes on the front nine caused her score to balloon. Lacee Scherer had a lot of good shots, but, like a lot of golfers a couple of bad holes kept her from scoring better. Eighth grader Katie Foley has really come on strong for the Vikings. When she gains some more physical strength, she’s going to shoot some low numbers.
Nobody on the North Branch roster is a senior. The Vikings, like the Wildcat girls, should be a better team in 2007.
