Ramberg and relay team on to State
Ramberg breaks school record held by whom else...himself
Nick Ramberg earned his way to State by winning both the 800 and 1600 meter runs. The 4x800 relay team (Aaron Cedergren, Ryan Norman, J.J. Koerber, Cody Good) qualified for the State Meet.
Ramberg took an early lead in the 1600 and was never really pushed as he cruised to a seven second win with a time of 4:29.41. The 800 was a different story. Ramberg broke from the pack after about 300 meters. Elk River’s Anthony Held stayed with him and tried to make his move coming out of the last curve. But Ramberg had plenty in the tank, as he was able to hold Held off. Ramberg’s time, 1:56.50, also broke his own school record, which he established earlier this season.
The relay team used its eight strong legs to run four good legs on the way to a nearly two second win over the Grand Rapids entrant.
Other top performances came from the girls 4x100 relay team that finished in 50.75 seconds. The team (Allysa Houle, Heather Schwab, Jill VandenHeuvel and Sara Swanson) finished only .29 behind section champ Elk River. VandenHeuvel picked up a fourth in the 200 meter dash as did Miranda Charley in the 800. Hannah Forstrom got a medal for fifth in the shot put and Shelly Oehlers’ toss earned her fifth place in the discus.
“Our kids gave it everything they had in every event. We had a couple of relays that were close to making it to State. Most of our kids are done with their season now, but I'm really proud of everyone who competed for us this year. We’ve really had a very good year! It will be fun to watch our relay team and Nick compete at the State Meet,” said Viking head coach Brian Hasleiet.
