The Chisago Lakes boys’ swimming and diving team finished fourth at the Section 2A Meet Friday, February 24. Breck/Blake won the 11 team sectional at the U. of Minnesota Aquatic Center.

The Wildcats’ 266 points put them behind Breck/Blake (359), Monticello (319.5) and Orono (311).

Chisago Lakes swimmers and divers qualified for the State Meet in four events.

Luke Spehar won the 100 butterfly in 57.78 to quality for the state meet. Wildcat head coach Jim Sauerbry said Spehar had, “A wonderful swim.” Ninth grader Kevin Roggeman had his best race of the year (1:02.24) to finish sixth. Cameron Novak, who didn’t make it to the finals, swam a 1:01.97 in the preliminaries. Ninth grader David Donahue swam a 1:07.68 to continue his streak of improving every time he raced for the entire season.

Hunter Heggerston’s 23.33 gave him fourth in the 50 freestyle and a birth in the state meet. Chisago swimmers David Willhite (24.89) and Ethan Karwand (25.28) also finshed their seasons at the Sections.

The 200 medley relay team qualified by finishing in 1:47.13. The team, John Donahue, Tom McGurk, Spehar and Heggerston dropped two seconds off the team record. “This time, they came to swim,” said Sauerbry. “They qualified for the state meet by beating the qualifying standard.”

“Steve Boo swam the best time of his life (1:57.01) .... and missed our team record by 2 tenths of a second,” said Sauerbry. But, his time in the 200 freestyle was not fast enough to go on.

McGurk and Mark Eagan swam good races, but didn’t qualify to go to State in the individual medley. “Hunter (Heggerston) swam the second fastest 100 (freestyle) of his life and...missed the qualifying standard by 3 thousandths of a second,” said Sauerbry. In the 500 freestyle, Andrew Turner cut three seconds off his personal best.

The Wildcats’ 200 freestyle relay team (D. Willhite, Boo, Spehar and Heggerston) broke the school record in 1:35.32 and missed the qualifying standard by two-tenths of a second. John Donahue broke the school record in the backstroke with a time of 1:02.09.
