The two teams traded baskets for the first six minutes and, when Andy Olness banked in a 10 footer, the score was tied 6-6. Irondale took the a lead they would never give up 30 seconds later on two freethrows. The Knights opened an 11-6 lead, halfway through the period, before the Wildcats scored again.
Olness scored again and Trevor Johnson hit a 10 foot turnaround to close the gap to one with 8:15 remaining. An Irondale three put the Knights up 14-10 before Olness scored again.
Blane Maher took his turn as scorer. In the next minute, Maher hit a jumper and took a feed from Tyler Bouwens to close the gap to 18-16 with 5:10 left. A minute later, Chris Golv’s bucket brought the ‘Cats to within two (20-18).
The Knights put some space between the two teams by outscoring Chisago 7-3 over the last four minutes and to take a 27-21 halftime lead.
“We played real hard, like we always do, and that kept us in it in the first half,” said Chisago Lakes head coach Herb Jangor. “But, even then , we were settling for good shots instead of waiting for the great ones.”
The first six minutes of the second half spelled doom for the Wildcats. A 14-3 run put the Knights in control, 41 to 24 at the 12 minute mark. Johnson kept the margin from growing by scoring the ‘Cats’ next six points over the next three minutes. Midway through the half, the score was 47-30.
From that point, the Wildcats could not find a way to cut into the lead and the Knights went home with a comfortable 20 point win.
“Settling for good shots caught up with us in the second half. All our hard work wasn’t enough. We shot 23 percent (17/59) for the game and we’re not gonna beat anyone that way.
“We did too much one-on-one and trying to score points, rather than trying to do things that make the team better. We have to learn to play within the system to give us a chance to win,” Jangor continued.
“Andy Olness had his best game for us offensively. He was the only guy who had a good game for us on the offensive end,” the coach added.
