Round Up is a special event for children and families alike. Student ambassadors greet the families when they arrive at school and escort them to the kindergarten classes.
The parents briefly meet the teacher and then head down to a parent meeting. Our superintendent welcomes the parents. They hear short information-packed messages from: our school nurse, transportation director, school age child care program, parent organizations and the respective principals.
The children have a chance to spend time with teachers and future classmates in a kindergarten classroom. They explore the different areas of the room, listen to a story, have a snack and get an idea of what kindergarten is like. One of the favorite opportunities is a first school bus ride!
The kindergarten teachers give each child a small reminder of when to know it is time to come to school at the end of summer. Ask any kindergartener what that is and they will remember. I don’t want to spoil the surprise.
Before long it is September and kindergarten begins. For those who haven’t been to kindergarten for awhile, it is a whole lot more than play and exploration. The typical student will enter kindergarten knowing some letters, shapes and numbers. They will leave kindergarten having had expert instruction in early literacy including: letter names, letter sounds, and blending and segmenting of letter sounds to words, and sight words. It is a rigorous and wonderful curriculum which we believe gives our students an excellent beginning into the new world of academics.
Any child who will be five years of age by September 1, 2006 is invited to Round Up. The Round up dates are April 19th at Primary School and April 21st at Taylors Falls. To enroll your five year old call the office of the school your child will be attending. Chisago Lakes Primary 213-2200, Taylors Falls 213-2100.
