Lakeside celebrates I Love to Read Month

During the month of February, students at Lakeside School proved that they love to read. “I Love To Read” was kicked off with a school wide reading on Monday, January 30. The entire school dropped what they were doing and read silently in the hallway.

During the month students were encouraged to read books and earn Accelerated Reader points. Each week students would take these AR tests and try to earn coupons for a candy bar, ice cream, chips/pop and the big individual incentive is lunch with the principal, Mr. Retzlaff. This year, 131 students in grades 3-5 earned this privilege.

As a school, they set a school wide goal of 7,000 Accelerated Reader points to dunk various staff members. The school achieved this goal and reached a total of 8,413 points. Some favorite titles read by the grade levels included the Harry Potter series and The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Third graders also had The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles, Inkheart, and Dragon Rider. The fourth graders enjoyed these titles The Series of Unfortunate Events, Superfudge, and Tale of Despereaux. Fifth graders also enjoyed the Unfortunate Events Series, Eragon, and Where the Red Fern Grows.

Other happenings during the month included having guest readers visit classrooms including our new superintendent, Mr. McLoughlin. There was a book trivia held where each classroom had to answer questions about authors, stories, and facts. As a school we collected gently used books for Hurricane Katrina victims. A favorite tradition each February has been where staff members submit a childhood photo with their favorite book and students are encouraged to guess who is who in the display case.

The grand finale for all students took place on Friday, March 10 including an awards ceremony. The highest AR point earners for each grade level included:

• 3rd Grade – Natalie Sandstrom – 102.9 pts.

• 4th Grade – Sarah Crowe – 125.6 pts.

• 5th Grade – Molly Sandstrom – 90.1 pts.

The most anticipated event was the drawing of names of students who were eligible to dunk the teachers.
