Golf season in full swing for Wildcat girls

It was a rainy day at Medina C.C., Thursday, April 20 when the Chisago Lakes girls’ golf team played North Suburban Conference favorite Benilde-St. Margaret’s.  “We dressed the part, were mentally prepared and wanted the win badly, but their power overtook us and we fell 210-193,” said Wildcat Coach Jeanne Hawkinson.

“The course was beautiful and was not that hard.  Short, straight holes with not much to stop us but a few sand bunkers and our uncertainty of why we couldn't score,” Hawkinson added.

Jenna Merry was low for the Wildcats with a 50, Krista Liebsch came in with a 52, Melissa Ubel shot a 53 and Megan Corradi a 55.

“The girls couldn’t understand why they hadn’t played better. No one felt the course was overly challenging.  It could have been the on again, off again rain showers, or the foreign territory and opponents.  We just couldn't pull it off.

“I was pleased to see the steady consistency of scores for my low four--only a five shot difference. This has been a strength of ours,” Hawkinson concluded.

Benilde’s Danielle Riley was the medalist with a 44 and teammate Allison Thimjon (48) had the only other score below 50.

CL at Purple Hawk Invitational

The Wildcats played in the Purple Hawk Invitational Monday, April 24. The girls played in cold, rainy conditions, but finished the 18 hole event with 428 total strokes. That score put them ninth of 19 teams.

“It never fails,” said coach Hawkinson. “We get some of the worst weather of the whole season for this tournament.” The Wildcats continued to be very consistent. Only eight strokes separated the low four CL scores.

Wildcats vs North Branch

Wednesday, April 15 the CL golfers hosted their neighbors to the north. The result was a rare loss on their home course. The score was North Branch 210, Chisago Lakes 211.

“Even though North Branch is considered our big rival, we really enjoy going head-to-head with them,” Hawkinson said. “They played well. We’re used to winning at home, but North Branch really stepped up. Overall, our girls played well, but our scores just weren’t low enough today.”
