The North Branch girls’ golf team competed in three events the first week in May. Monday, May 1 the Vikings played in the Forest Lake Invitational at Forest Hills Country Club. May 2, the girls traveled to Medina Country Club to play Benilde-St. Margaret’s and hosted Totino-Grace Thursday.

At Forest Hills, the Vikings recorded a 428, which brought them in 15th of 19 teams. The course was in surprisingly good condition considering that the tournament was played on day three of a three day rain storm. Most of the day was pleasant, with the exception of a 40 minute downpour in the last hour of the event.

The highlight of the tournament for the Vikings was that eighth grader Katie Foley recorded her best 18 hole score.

The Vikings played at another very wet course in Medina. Rolling Green Country Club had soaked up nearly four inches of moisture in the three days before the Vikings played there. North Branch played OK, but were no match for Benilde on its home course. Benilde carded a 190, while the Vikings had 207.

The Vikings struggled with the length of the relatively open course. The good news for the Vikings was that junior Kelsey Johnson recorded her best score of the season. Johnson typically plays her best golf in May meets. Her teammates and coach are confident that pattern will repeat itself.

Totino-Grace at North Branch

Thursday, May 4, the Vikings played in cool, but drier, conditions at home against a good, senior dominated Totino-Grace team. The Eagles played well as they defeated North Branch 194-208.

As usual, Lacee Scherer and Amy Aho led their team. Scherer had one of her best rounds of the year with a very steady 46. Aho’s 52 was not one of her best, but she struck the ball well aside from the two shots she uncharacteristically hit out of bounds. A similar analysis of Kelsey Johnson’s 54 would be accurate. Johnson overcame two OB’s on the first hole to play fairly well.
