The term communication is used often in our daily language. It takes on many forms and has a variety of meanings. Communication is a process, usually through language, of sending or receiving information. It is used to inform, educate and acknowledge people and events.

Our school board has spent a considerable amount of time discussing and implementing improved ways of communicating school business and activities to the public. One of the latest improvements in school communication is the upgraded web page for Chisago Lakes Schools. This new web page provides information about all buildings and sites in the district and is a wonderful tool to use for information on all activities and events.

Each school building utilizes many and various ways to keep parents and the public informed on school happenings. We have weekly bulletins that are printed in a traditional way, as well as daily information given to teachers and students by computer, and a school happening website. For about 15 years, we have used a weekly Communication Folder that goes home with information every Wednesday with children.

Parent/Teacher Conferences are still used twice a year. Conferences still remain a valuable way to show a student’s progress, successes, goals and areas of concern.

Our first conferences were held Oct. 16-18. As usual, we had a fantastic turn out with almost 100 percent participation from our parents.

As an educator, it has bothered me that often parent/teacher communication may not happen again until our next scheduled conferences. We want parents to know that we are open to direct parent conferences at anytime during the school year to discuss a child’s educational progress and needs. Each teacher has a telephone in his/her classroom for talking with parents. If you are unable to talk directly to your child’s teacher when you call, please leave a message and you will receive a return call from the teacher. A conversation with your child’s educator will help insure that your child receives a quality education. So become involved in your child’s education. Communication is a two-way process!
