The Wildcats brought home medals in eight of 12 individual events, including two firsts, three seconds and three third place finishes.
The 400 freestyle relay team (Lauren Koch, Andrea Olson, Leah Secord and Emily Stein) earned a first for finishing in 3:51.32. That time is less than four seconds slower than the section record, established by Hibbing in 2005. Diver Ana Peltier also took home a first for the ‘Cats. Her 336.85 point performance was almost 80 points better than the second place diver from Milaca.
Stein earned two second place medals. She swam the 50 freestyle in 25.96 and the 100 freestyle in 56.74. She finished less than one half second out of first in both events. Koch took her second in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:25.32.
Koch also had a third place finish in the 500 freestyle. Her time, 5:36.71, was two seconds faster than the state qualifying time, meaning that she would have earned a spot in the State Meet, regardless of what place she finished. Secord placed third in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:05.73. Lindsay Carlson’s 242.70 points earned her a third place medal and a spot in the state diving competition.
Olson was fourth in the 500 freestyle in 5:49.92. Secord and Angie Dery won fifth place medals. Secord swam the 100 freestyle in 57.29 and Dery did the 100 backstroke in 1:08.11. Other medals went to Olson for a sixth place time of 2:09.07 in the 200 freestyle and Heidi Willhite, who swam the 100 freestyle in 1:01. 98 to earn eighth place.
Peltier, Koch, Stein, Olson, Secord and Carlson competed at the State Meet, November 20-22 at the University of Minnesota. Check next week’s Press for results.
