The Wildcats thoroughly dominated conference opponent Robbinsdale Cooper, firing 44 shots at the Hawks on their way to a 3-1 victory Tuesday, November 21 at Chisago Lakes Arena.
The Wildcats struck first at 6:48 of the first period. Morgan Baumgard broke out of the Wildcat zone with the puck, used her speed to go around the defense, drove the net and beat the Hawk goalie with a beautiful backhand shot to put the Wildcats up 1-0. The Hawks tied it up four minutes later with a power play goal to make it 1-1 after one period.
The Wildcats retook the lead midway through the second period. Jessica Lorr, nearing the end of her shift, forced a turnover in the Cooper zone. As Sam Lorr came over the boards onto the ice, Jessica Lorr skated toward the blue line and left a drop pass. Sam Lorr picked up the puck in stride, carried it straight toward the net and shot the puck into the upper right corner to give the Wildcats a 2-1 lead.
The Wildcats gave themselves a little breathing room just over a minute into the third period. Baumgard cycled out of the corner in the Hawk zone, and carried the defender with her as she left a drop pass for Rachel Miles at the blue line. Miles ripped a shot, and Krista Liebsch, standing in front of the net, tipped it in. The Wildcats kept the Hawks off the board for the rest of the third period, making the final score Chisago Lakes 3, Robbinsdale Cooper 1.
“The line of Sauter, Baumgard and Liebsch had four points between them,” said Wildcat head coach Jason Mahlen. “They clicked well together and had a solid night overall. As a team, we controlled possession for most of the game, carried the puck well and passed the puck well. But we only scored three goals on 44 shots. We need to learn to capitalize better on our opportunities.”
