Lauren Koch and Emily Stein had big nights for the ‘Cats. Both had two individual firsts and swam a leg of the winning 400 freestyle relay. Koch’s wins came in the 200 individual medley (2:34.44) and the 500 freestyle (5:55.51). Stein won the 50 freestyle (27:07) and 100 freestyle (58:63).
Koch and Stein were joined in the 400 relay win by Andrea Olson and Leah Secord. The quartet won the event by 22 seconds in 4:03.64.
Other first places went to Secord in the 200 freestyle (2:15.19) and Ana Peltier, with a score of 182.55 in diving.
Second place finishes came from the 200 medley relay team (Angie Dery, Stein, Koch, Secord), Secord (100 freestyle), Olson (500 freestyle), the 200 freestyle relay team (Laura Greene, Heidi Willhite, Kathy Julik-Heine, Olson) and Dery (100 backstroke).
Wildcats who finished third included Alex Thomsen (diving), Julik-Heine (100 backstroke), Sarah Kopp (100 breast stroke) and the 400 freestyle relay team (Erika Kekuk, Karra Radziwill, Dery, Leah Hathaway).
The team also had seven fourths and six fifths, which contributed to the team total score.
“What a great meet! A lot of girls stepped up big,” said Wildcat head coach Ed Wakefield. “We told the team that it would be close and everyone would count. This sure proved to be true. If any one of those don’t take fifth, we would lose the meet.
“As usual, diving was huge for us. It really hurt Spring Lake Park to only have one diver.
“We went into the last relay down by five points. This meant we had to take first and third to win the meet. We did. I figured we could take the first, but I was not sure about the third. That relay team did a great job and it was not even close for third place,” Wakefield added.
The girls host Irondale at 4 p.m. today (September 14).
