Wildcat firls soccer holds off North Branch for a 1-0 victory
CL 1, NB O
The teams from either end of Chisago County Road 14 played a game typical of their rivalry.
While the Wildcats appeared to dominate play in the game, Viking goalkeeper Vanessa Gamelin and the rest of the Vikings kept the Wildcats off the scoreboard until the second half.
The Wildcats scored the game’s only goal early in the half, then held on for a 1-0 victory Thursday evening, September 14 at the North Branch High School football field.
The Wildcat goal came in the 50th minute. A Wildcat corner kick bounced around out in front of the Viking net. The ball flew out to Wildcat senior Natasha Lietzau at the top of the box. She used her left foot to volley the ball out of the air and past Gamelin into the upper right corner of the net.
“It looked like Natasha jumped six feet in the air after the ball went in,” said Wildcat head coach Brett Kjos. “She was very excited, and so were the rest of us.”
Wildcat goalkeeper Kristy Verhey earned her second shutout of the season.
“We carried the play for much of the game,” said Kjos, “but managed just the one goal. We shot a lot of balls just wide and over the top. This was a great win for us.
“Allie Rostad really played well the last two games. She had many scoring opportunities. She’s improved so much this year. She always seems to be in the right spot and, if she keeps doing what she has been doing, the goals should come,” Kjos added.
