Fireworks on Friday night? Ki Chi Saga Days has it all

School is just around the corner and that can only mean one thing. The Minnesota State Fair is very near and Ki Chi Saga Days are here. After last weekend's deluge, we could all use a little sun and fun outdoors. Hopefully, Mother Nature will cooperate and give us some beautiful weather.

Ki Chi Saga Days is one of my very favorite celebrations around our area. The good people of Chisago City have really put together a great celebration for you and your family. The festivities get rolling on Friday with a city-wide garage sale. You can pick up maps at City Hall or here at the Press. If you have children, there is a carnival that opens on Friday. We have attended the carnival in the past, and our kids really enjoy the rides and games. Then in the evening Chisago City does something out of the "norm." They have their fireworks the first day of Ki Chi Saga Days instead of the last day. I think it is a great idea, especially when kids will be staying up late.

Saturday gets started with the ever-growing popular Ki Chi Saga race. This year they have added a 15K race to accompany their 5K race/walk. You may register at Zion Lutheran Church the day of the race. The race begins at 8:15 a.m. sharp.

There will be an Old World Market in Moberg Park beginning at 9 a.m. that features many, many terrific vendors. Also at 9 a.m., the search for Vilhelm Moberg's horn begins. The first clue will be in this edition of the Press and following clues will be posted at Chisago City Hall. Finding the horn is definitely worth your time. If you do find Moberg's horn, you will be $500 richer.

Saturday also had a classic car show, music in the park, and dancers performing Swedish Dances, also in the park. There is a historical walking tour that is given by one of the most knowledgeable historians in Chisago City, Donna Colberg. Kids, bring your skateboards to Chuckie Lundquist Park at 3 p.m. on Saturday. There is a skateboarding competition that in the past, has really brought out the crowds. After the competition, stick around for some local teen bands playing rock and roll in the park.

A pancake breakfast at the Chisago City Community Center kicks off Sunday's festivities. Be sure to bring your lawn chairs for the Grand Day Parade that begins at 2 p.m. I have found that Old Towne Road is the best spot for viewing the parade.

I could go on and on about Ki Chi Saga Days, but the best way is to experience it for yourself. When you are taking in some of the festivities, be sure to stop in at some of the Chisago City businesses. Whether it is great food, or great shopping, Chisago City has something for everyone. I hope to see you there.

It seems like we have just now had the chance of the bridge collapse to really sink in. With the tragedy fresh in our minds, we (the state) lost at least six more Minnesotans to ravaging flood waters. If I lived in that area, I know I would have never expected the sheer force and destruction heavy rains would produce. Our hearts and prayers go out to those who lost loved ones in the floods. If you would like to make a donation to the flood relief you may reach them by dialing 211. I just spoke to a representative from the State Emergency Recovery and she told me at this time they are not asking for donations of food or supplies. Money is always accepted and appreciated.
