After 135 years with a three-step entrance, a handicap accessible ramp has been built at the Stone House Museum in Marine-on-St. Croix. Seen in the photo, it was constructed by local carpenter Jim Rolig. "It took three short days of work," he said. "I say short days because it was during that stretch of hot weather, so I tried to work when it was shaded."

The building was erected for $2,000 in 1872 by Swedish stone mason Gustav Carlson. It was constructed as the Marine Township meeting hall and jail. After the township was dissolved in 1895, it was used as a school, community center and storage until 1963. In 1934 it was cited as an outstanding example of Swedish stonework by the National Historic American Buildings Society.

Packed with interesting antiques and artifacts, the museum is located at 271 5th Street in Marine-on-St. Croix, across from Christ Lutheran Church. It will be open from 2 to 5 p.m., September 1, 2, 15 and 16, then by appointment only until closing for the year October 31.
