Wildcat boys hockey team turns up the heat on Simley
Pucksters roll behind Skoog's and Haus' two goals
Freshman Cory Lushanko and sophomore Matt Peterson scored their first varsity goals for the Wildcats. Seven players chipped in with one assist each: senior Andy Slagle, senior Jeremy Patterson, Skoog, senior Aaron Bergerson, sophomore Tommy Johnson, Lushanko and freshman Andrew Habel. Habel leads the Wildcats with three assists so far this season. Senior goaltender Pat Fisher, making his first start of the season, stopped 26 of 28 shots to earn the victory.
"Pat Fisher did a great job in the nets for us today," said Wildcat head coach Corey McKinnon. "We tell the kids to always be ready to play. Pat got his first start of the season, stepped up and stopped the puck. And Aaron Bergerson stepped up for us, too. Aaron does a lot of things well - he works hard, moves his feet, covers back on backchecks and usually seems to be in the right spot at the right time. A lot of the things he does don't show up in the scorebook, but those things lead to scoring chances and goals. He does a better and better job every day."
The teams combined to take 19 penalties for the game, including 11 in the second period. "The game had its sloppy moments," said McKinnon, "but both teams played well in the third period. Our primary focus is to play the game the way it's supposed to be played, whether it's close or not. To Simley's credit, even after Tony Skoog's shorthanded goal put us up 6-2 less than two minutes into the third period, their kids kept their heads up and played hard for the whole period."
McKinnon continued, "Our goals were good, hard-working goals, like Lushanko's quick shot from in front of the net in the first period. We went to the net a lot more than we did at the Thanksgiving weekend tournament. Also, our guys were anticipating the forecheck a lot better. When you're a step ahead on the forecheck, it can be the difference between night and day in a game."
