Tied 1-1 going into the third period against Duluth East, the Wildcats started to dominate in the second period. But the Greyhounds scored two goals in the first three minutes of the third, on the way to a six-goal period. The Wildcats lost 7-1 Saturday, December 1 at the DECC in Duluth.
The Wildcats struck early in the first period. Starting in her own zone, Ashley Elumba sped down the left side of the ice, skated to the left circle and fired. The Greyhound goalie made the save, but Shannon Segarra swooped in and knocked the rebound into the net putting the Wildcats up 1-0 at the 2:32 mark.
"All three of Shannon's goals this season have been rebound goals," said Wildcat head coach Jason Mahlen. "She's shown the desire and aggressiveness that we like to see of our players and she's taking advantage of her opportunities."
Duluth East tied the game midway through the first period. The Wildcats came out and dominated play throughout the second period. "I thought we were going to steal one," said Mahlen. "Duluth East is a good team. They've beaten Cloquet and tied Grand Rapids already this season. We had them on their heels in the second period. We thought it was going to be a one-goal game, and we were looking forward to the third period."
However, the Wildcats came out flat and the Greyhounds came out flying. Duluth East piled on six goals in the third period against the shell-shocked Wildcats to win the game 7-1. "I'm not sure what happened in the third period," said Mahlen. "We had played so well the first two periods, then everything went wrong. We just didn't play well. It's one of those periods you don't want to think about. We just need to move on and look forward to the next game."
Eighth grader Jamie Dobosenski made her first appearance in goal this season, coming in midway through the third period.
