Young Wildcat wrestlers open season with win over Grand Rapids
A young, inexperienced Wildcat team opened the 2007-2008 wrestling season with a good showing at the Chisago Lakes Invitational Saturday, December 1. They beat Grand Rapids and put up a good fight against tough Forest Lake and Hibbing squads.
"We got the season off to a good start," said Wildcat head coach Shawn Frederixon. "We won more individual matches against Forest Lake than we ever have. We're a young team and we're going to have some tough matches this year. Today, the kids worked hard and got some good results. That's only the second time we've ever beaten Grand Rapids."
Four Wildcat wrestlers went undefeated in the tournament - Tony Gall (HWT), Travis Kammerer (135), Mike Michaelson (125) and Pao Thao (112). Thao is new to Chisago Lakes from Blaine. Troy Montague (215) also had a good day, winning two matches before losing to the number-one-ranked wrestler in the state.

"Columbia Heights is a little down this year," said Wildcat head coach Shawn Frederixon. "They had a few forfeits tonight. But, all in all, we wrestled pretty well to win pretty big."

Princeton Quadrangular
The Wildcats struggled early at the Princeton Quadrangular Friday, December 7, but wrestled better through the rest of the day. They lost to Princeton and Sibley East, but finished the night on a high note by beating Long Prairie - Grey Eagle. The Wildcats trailed Long Prairie 32-27 heading into the last two matches, and Tony Gall (HWT) and Troy Montague (215) both pinned their opponents to give the Wildcats a 39-32 win.
"We didn't wrestle up to our potential against Princeton'" said Wildcat head coach Shawn Frederixon. "We didn't win close matches when we needed to. Give Princeton credit, though. They're a good squad. Against Long Prairie, we won all the close matches, and that made the difference. We started competing better towards the end of the day. That will happen with a young team. The younger guys were tentative at first and, by the end, they really started going after it.
"Travis Kammerer is undefeated so far this year," continued Frederixon. "He's really doing a nice job. Hopefully he can keep that up."
Troy Montague had pins at 11 seconds, 25 seconds and 21 seconds in his three matches on the day. Added together with his 11-second pin against Columbia Heights, Montague has only wrestled for one minute, four seconds in his last four matches. "He's an exciting wrestler to watch," said Frederixon, "and he's getting his matches over so quickly he doesn't even have time to break a sweat."
