Cooper and North Branch fall victim to Wildcat boys hockey
Luke Angrimson's laser-like goal 17 seconds into the third period broke a 2-2 tie, then the Wildcats added two more goals for a 5-2 victory over the Robbinsdale Cooper Hawks Thursday, January 25 at New Hope Ice Arena.
The Wildcats outshot the Hawks 27-14 through the first two periods, and the play of Cooper goalie Tyler Venne kept the Hawks in the game. But, the Hawks took so many penalties they played shorthanded much of the night and looked exhausted in the third period. The well-conditioned Wildcats came up with a conference win.
Scott Liebsch got the Wildcats on the board with an unassisted power play goal midway through the first period. The Hawks tied it up two minutes into the second period. Just one minute later, Jeremy Patterson scored on the power play, assisted by Jeremiah Bergren, to put the Wildcats back in front. The Hawks, not to be outdone, tied it up one minute after that, and the score remained 2-2 for the rest of the period.
After getting control of the puck in the Hawk zone at the beginning of the third period, Ross Jones passed the puck from the left point to Angrimson at the top of the right circle. Angrimson unleashed a blistering slapshot, beating Venne high and left to give the Wildcats a 3-2 lead. Bob LeVasseur added an insurance goal at the 8:18 mark, assisted by both Slagle brothers. Scott Liebsch's rebound of Aaron Slagle's shot at the 10:53 mark made the final score Chisago Lakes 5, Robbinsdale Cooper 2.

The Vikings kept the Wildcats off the scoreboard for the first twelve minutes of the first period, but once the scoring started, it never stopped as the Wildcats scored 11 goals on 70 - yes, 70 - shots for an 11-0 win over the Vikings.
DJ Haus, Aaron Slagle and Jeremy Patterson each had two goals for the Wildcats. Andy Slagle led the Wildcats with four assists, and Jake Parenteau had three assists. Viking goalie Nicole Bredahl played well in the nets, stopping 59 of the Wildcats' 70 shots. Wildcat goaltenders Tyler Krumm, making his first varsity start, and Pat Fisher combined for 11 saves and the shutout. After the game, many Wildcat players and coaches said they'd never been involved in a game where one of the teams had 70 shots on net.
"These games were two good tests for us to see what kind of team would show up," said Wildcat head coach Corey McKinnon. "We needed to respect our opponents by playing our best hockey. Without even looking at the scoreboard, our guys passed the test this week.
"All in all, we had a good month," continued McKinnon. We finished 7-1. We set some team performance goals, focusing on fundamentals, playing the game the right way and cutting down on stupid penalties, and we've seen a lot of good things. One of the goals for our goaltender Tom Fitzer was to not allow any soft goals. I don't think he allowed one during the whole month."

The Wildcats (11-8 overall, 6-2 conference) have just one game this week. They'll host the Cambridge Isanti Bluejackets tomorrow night, Friday, February 2, at 7 p.m. at Chisago Lakes Arena. Cambridge beat the Wildcats 5-0 in the Wildcats' Holiday Tournament earlier this season. "This is a great opportunity for us," said McKinnon. "It's sort of a retest, to see what we've learned about ourselves and our team and who we want to be going into a tough stretch of games leading into the section playoffs."
