CL wrestlers win two at Cooper, push St. Francis to limit
Benilde St. Margaret's 10
After Minnesota high school wrestling was suspended for a week because of the virus issue, the Wildcat wrestlers were eager to get back into the fray. At the Cooper Triangular Thursday, February 8, the Wildcats wrestled an undermanned Benilde-St. Margaret's team and came away with a 66-10 victory.
Benilde has only four wrestlers - yes, four -- in their program this year, and one of them wasn't available for the match with the Wildcats due to an injury. "The few kids they do have are pretty good," said Wildcat assistant coach Dave Hinsch.
John Hogie recorded his 75th career win against Benilde.

In their second match at the Cooper Triangular, the Wildcats built a huge lead early and came away with a relatively easy 46-27 victory over the hosts from Robbinsdale Cooper.
The Wildcats opened the match with six straight wins - pins by Travis Kammerer (112), Mike Michaelson (119), Mitch Anderson (125) and John Hogie (135) and two Cooper forfeits - to take a 36-0 lead. The Wildcats got technical falls from Derek Silbernagel (152) and Cameron Gilliam (160) to build the lead to 46-9. Cooper won the last three matches by pin, making the final score Chisago Lakes 46, Cooper 27. St. Francis 41, CL 25
In their final match of the regular season, the Wildcats lost 41-25 to the 14th-ranked St. Francis Fighting Saints Friday, February 9 at Chisago Lakes. St. Francis won the North Suburban Conference with a 9-0 record.
The Wildcats kept it close through the early weights. Tim Wells was pinned at 103 pounds, but Travis Kammerer's pin at 112 tied the score at 6-6. Mike Michaelson (119) lost to the third-ranked wrestler in the state, Trent Herold, 10-3. Since Michaelson kept the deficit to less than 8 points, the Fighting Saints received only three points for the win.
Mitch Anderson nearly pinned 10th-rank Mac Rivard in the first period, and ended up with a 6-2 upset victory, tying the team score at 9-9. And, after Jonathan Barwin lost at 130, the Wildcats beat their second ranked opponent of the day as John Hogie upset seventh-ranked Mike Castellano 6-4. This brought the Wildcats to within two points, trailing 14-12.
But, St. Francis won the next two matches by pin to go up 26-12. Mike Welle gave the Wildcats some new life with a gutty 5-4 win at 152. Cameron Gilliam's major decision at 160 closed the St. Francis lead to 26-19. But Mike Melter (171) was pinned by the top-ranked wrestler in the state at his weight, Robbie Kriesel, stretching the St. Francis lead to 32-19. Jason Schumann lost 5-4 at 189, giving the Fighting Saints a big enough lead to win the match. The teams traded pins in the last two matches, making the final score St. Francis 41, Chisago Lakes 25.
"Our kids did a great job," said Wildcat assistant coach Dave Hinsch, "against a team with a lot of ranked wrestlers. They sent five ranked wrestlers against us, and we beat two of them. Jason Schumann lost a heartbreaker at 189 that could have gone either way. But this was a fun night for us. There were a lot of fans and there was a lot of energy in the room."

Section Preview
The Wildcats, seeded seventh in Section 7AAA, will take on tenth-seeded Andover today, Thursday, February 15, at 5 p.m. at Cambridge-Isanti High School. "We can't take Andover for granted," said Wildcat assistant coach Dave Hinsch.
If the Wildcats beat Andover, they'll wrestle second-seeded Coon Rapids, ranked eighth in the state, tonight at 7 p.m. at Cambridge. "Coon Rapids is somewhat like St. Francis," said Hinsch. "They have some big guns, but we have some spots where we can pull out some victories." If the Wildcats beat Coon Rapids tonight, they could wrestle up to two more matches Friday, February 16, at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. at Cambridge, in pursuit of the section championship.
