Benilde-St. Margaret's 9, Chisago Lakes/Pine City 2

The Wildcats stayed with the fourth-ranked Red Knights from Benilde-St. Margaret's early, trailing just 3-2 midway through the second period. But the Red Knights poured it on after that, beating the Wildcats 9-2 Friday, January 12 at Chisago Lakes Arena.

The Wildcats trailed 1-0 after one period despite being outshot 19-3. Two minutes into the second period, Kate Boynton scored an unassisted goal to tie the game. The Red Knights scored to take the lead at 3:55. The Wildcats tied it again 16 seconds later on a goal by Shannon Segarra, assisted by Ariel Novak. The scoring outburst continued as the Red Knights scored just 30 seconds later. The Red Knights scored two more goals in the second period and four goals in the third period, making the final score Benilde-St. Margaret's 9, Chisago Lakes 2.

"We played like there was nothing to lose," said Wildcat head coach Jason Mahlen. "And we stayed with them for the first half of the game. But Benilde is a very good team. There's a reason they're ranked fourth in the state. Despite the result, our girls seemed to have a lot of fun. They stayed positive and worked hard 'til the end of the game, and I'm proud of them for that."

Duluth 4, Chisago Lakes 1

Playing a noon game the day after a tough night game against Benilde, a tired Wildcat team trailed Duluth just 2-1 after two periods. But Duluth added two goals in the third period to beat the Wildcats 4-1 Saturday, January 13 at Chisago Lakes Arena.

Duluth scored the only goal of the first period on a power play. The Wildcats tied it up briefly at 12:09 of the second period. Rhiannon Sauter took the face-off in the right circle in the Duluth zone. She pulled the puck over to Morgan Baumgard, who fired a hard shot. Samantha Lorr put away the rebound to make the score 1-1. But, Duluth re-took the lead just 40 seconds later to make the score 2-1 after two periods. They added two more goals in the third period to make the final score Duluth 4, Chisago Lakes 1.

"This isn't a hard game to analyze," said Wildcat head coach Jason Mahlen. "The game was even and the shots were fairly even. They just capitalized on some scoring opportunities and we didn't."
