Wildcats lose close one to Spring Lake Park, win two at Cambridge
The Wildcats matched up well against conference opponent Spring Lake Park, but the Panthers squeezed out a 35-33 win over the Wildcats Thursday, January 11 at Chisago Lakes.
In one of the key matchups of the evening, Wildcat Mitch Anderson, ranked eighth in the state, won a hard-fought 3-2 win over fifth-ranked Jamon Brunette. Anderson scored all of his points in the second period on an escape and a takedown, and limited Brunette to just two escapes for the match.
It looked like Jonathan Barwin (135) had Augustine Dolo pinned early in their match. As Dolo rolled over onto both shoulders while attempting a maneuver against Barwin, Barwin held him there for a few seconds. But the referee did not award the pin to Barwin, and Dolo pinned Barwin later in the match.
Mike Welle's matchup with Justin Dahl was the turning point in the match. Welle and Dahl tied 1-1 in regulation, and Dahl took down Welle for two points and the win with just 15 seconds left in the first overtime.
"That was a fun dual" said Wildcat head coach Shawn Frederixon. "We needed to get at least one more pin to win the match, but it just didn't happen."

Hinckley-Finlayson
Jaguar Invitational
Despite missing two of their top wrestlers, the rest of the Wildcats stepped up their performance to finish third out of ten at the Jaguar Invitational (Hinckley/Finlayson) Saturday, January 13.
Mike Michaelson (119) and Troy Montague (189) won their weight classes. Michaelson had three pins in his championship run. Those three pins gave Michaelson 25 for his career. Travis Kammerer ended up in second place after losing 8-7 to Andrew Kustleben of Holdingford in the 112-pound championship match. Tony Gall (285) was pinned with just 12 seconds left in his match against Dain Racker of Melrose and also ended up in second place. And Jonathan Barwin (130) got his second pin in two days, this time over Chris Rausch of Melrose.
The two missing wrestlers were John Hogie, who had to sit out the tournament because of an injury, and Mitch Anderson, who ended up in sixth place even though he became ill and had to withdraw early.
"If we had had John and Mitch," said Wildcat head coach Shawn Frederixon, "we would have had a chance to push Mound Westonka for the title. We ended up just a couple of points from second. I was really proud of the way the rest of our team wrestled and stepped up their performance."
"With three meets and eight individual matches in three days," said Frederixon, "it made for quite a challenging week for our guys. But they seemed to rise up and find the energy they needed to do well on Saturday. The tough schedule will help to toughen them up both mentally and physically as they realize how much their bodies can do. We've got just a few weeks left before the section tournament."
