The Cambridge tourney, Saturday, January 20 was stacked with tough teams, and the Vikings wrestled two of the top teams in the state -- sixth-ranked Simley and seventh-ranked Forest Lake. They also wrestled a good St. Cloud Apollo team, and came out on the short end of all three duals.

Simley 58, North Branch 9

"Simley is a fantastic team," said Viking coach Tony Aho, "but our guys really went out hard against them. Erik Kostik beat one of their better kids, while Matt Newham made a nice return to the line-up, winning 7-2. Justin Bergerson started off slowly, but came back to nearly get a nice upset at 215. Greg Arnt continued his winning ways with a hard-fought overtime win at 171."

Forest Lake 61, NB 15

"Well, another solid, state-ranked team," said coach Tony Aho. "Tom Mork, Erik Kostik and Boyd Suparat all looked very aggressive in wins over solid Forest Lake opponents. Greg Arnt and John Wickoren battled tough at times, but could not quite sustain a six-minute effort to get the job done. These two will always work hard in practice to rectify that situation."

St. Cloud Apollo 51, NB 22

"This was a very disappointing loss," said Viking head coach Tony Aho. "After battling two state-ranked teams earlier in the day, we had a chance to wrestle a team that matched our current experience and ability level and could not get it done. Individually, Jacob Kostik wrestled well and got his first win on varsity, while Matt Newham continued to show improvement along with Jared Landon. Levi Klande and Boyd Suparat had hard fought wins which will benefit them as the season progresses. Erik Kostik ended a 3-0 day with another aggressive effort at 119. He is proving to be a hard-working leader and shows his athleticism and strength each time out. Greg Arnt and John Wickoren again had nice early leads against solid competition but could not quite get it done. Again, these two are great kids and will find a way to complete matches."
