Vikings bow out of sections with loss to Duluth East
The Bluejackets scored two in the first off Viking starter Danny Ginal. C-I added another in the second to make it 3-0. It stayed that way until the Vikings scored in the sixth. Jeff Olson's RBI single drove JT Lindholm in to make the score 3-1.
The 'Jackets came right back with a run in their half of the sixth to make the final score 4-1.
Ginal pitched the first three innings and gave up two earned runs on six hits, two walks and a strikeout. Chris Becklin finished the game, giving up one run on two hits and one base-on-balls.
Chisago Lakes 5, NB 3
The Vikings built a 3-0 lead as NB starter Tony Dahlberg no-hit the Wildcats for five innings at Chisago Lakes, Friday, May 25.
The Vikings plated three runs in the second to take the early lead. Danny Ginal singled and moved to second when Drew Lindquist walked. Sam Johnson's sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third. Ginal scored on Mark Johnson's single and Lindquist crossed the plate when Ben Meemken grounded out to the CL pitcher.
Johnson moved to third on a wild pitch. Justin Novak, on base after being hit by a pitch, was caught in a run down as he tried to steal second. Novak evaded the tag long enough for Johnson to break for home. Johnson scored and Novak ended on second. With the score 3-0, Novak was picked off second by Wildcat hurler Mike Welle on the next pitch, ending the Viking threat.
The Wildcats used a Viking error, a hit batsman, a sacrifice and a walk to score their first run in the bottom of the fifth.
With one out in the bottom of the sixth, Dahlberg gave up his only hit. Two walks and a hit batter later, CL had its second run. Chris Becklin relieved Dahlberg and walked in the third Wildcat run. With two out, a fly ball down the left field line scored two more and Chisago led 5-3.
The Vikings were unable to score in the seventh, giving CL a sweep of the season two-game series.
Section 7AAA at Duluth
The Vikings were seeded sixth in the Section 7AAA north subsection and played Duluth East at Ordean Field in Duluth Tuesday, May 29. The Greyhounds outscored the Vikings 8-1 to send North Branch home for the season.
The Vikings scored its only run in the first without a hit. Tony Dahlberg sacrificed Jeff Olson in to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead.
The lead didn't last long. Duluth scored four runs in each of the first two innings. Danny Ginal started the game and took the loss. Becklin replaced Ginal and pitched four scoreless innings. But, the Vikings were unable to get a hit the entire contest and couldn't mount a serious challenge.
The 8-1 defeat ended the Vikings' season with a 5-16 record.
