Preparations for the competition began in September as students were split into teams to compete in the four classes: Stock, Modified, E-85 and Experimental.
Plans included rebuilding three vehicles and constructing a new vehicle to compete in the Stock class.
Design proposals were written and submitted in February and body molds were constructed and parts ordered. The vehicles were ready by early May, with little time to test the vehicles before the competition.
The first day of competition brought a lot of sun and wind and the Chisago Lakes vehicles all in the running to place in the top three in their classes.
Reinspection of vehicles on the second day placed CL's Experimental vehicle into the Modified class instead, putting the car out of the top three spots.
The CL Stock class vehicle performed well and took first place for the third year in a row. Team members were: Ryan Whitacre, Adam Tilly, Chris Perkins, Kandi Renalt, Roger French and Zach Linman. Their vehicle averaged 495.7 mpg with a top run of 503.76 mpg.
In the Modified class, the team of Eric Zitelman, Bryan Revier, Zach Ford and Jimmy Anderson averaged 626.12 mpg with their vehicle and earned second place. The reclassified second vehicle in the Modified class included team members Dan Boyer, Jake Salokar and Gus Garbe.
The E-85 class vehicle earned third place, manned by Gerald Johnson and Justin Rivard, with an average of 325.15 mpg. The team also included Aaron and Ryan Rivard, who were unable to attend the competition.
The team members worked hard throughout the year to prepare for the competition, with support from the school and community. The team expresses appreciation to H & L Machines for making the parts and donations from Lindstrom Fire Dept., River Bend Circle, Muska Electric, Equity Homes and Ronald and Juanita Morgan.
Thanks to Mike Boyer and Ken Renalt who took time to get the team and the vehicles to the competition and the Chisago Lakes School Dist. for allowing the teams to participate.
