It was definitely a fun twist on a traditional fairy tale, and the cast and crew of Wooing Wed Widing Hood from Chisago Lakes Middle School performed it well.

The first two installments of the play were performed Feb. 27, but last week's snowstorm postponed the second day of performances until this week; they were held March 6 instead.

The fractured, funny fairy tale spoof begins with Mr. and Mrs. Hood, played by Josh Salaba and Rebekah Zabel, lazily watching television from their permanent positions on the sofa.

They are interrupted by daughter Little Red Riding Hood, played by Mary Cross, and her two sisters, Medium Purple Riding Hood, played by Maggie Gerty and Big Green Riding Hood, played by Katie Nelson.

Red complains that she wants fresh air by going to visit her grandmother and off she goes.

Meanwhile, in the royal palace of Wychwood-under-Ooze, the king and queen, played by Alex Wolkenhauer and Abby Collins, decide their sons must compete to see who will "woo" Little Red Riding Hood.

They call in the Fairy Godmother, played by Aubrey Lawlor, to come up with three tasks the boys must complete to earn wooing rights.

Wise Prince Jason, played by Leigh Dehmer, plans to use his intelligence to woo Red. Strong Prince Justin, played by Josh Linman, plans to impress her with his brawn. Loud Prince Frank, however, is simple-minded and, well, loud. Chase Kammerer plays the part well, yelling his way through the tasks while not really understanding what wooing is all about.

"I don't want to woo her, I just want to go on a date with her," he says. He also has a difficult time saying Red Riding Hood, so it comes out as "Wed Widing Hood."

The three princes visit Red's grandma, played by Anna Petersen and learn that Red likes waffles for breakfast, rides the bus to school and likes riding a bike.

Meanwhile, the Evil Queen, played by Clara Linehan, has come on scene to wreak havoc with the three tasks. She is hired by Mr. and Mrs. Hood to thwart the wooing plans, because they want Red around to wait on them instead.

When the Fairy Godmother places Red in the woods so the boys can find and rescue her, the Evil Queen tries to make her hopelessly lost. Fortunately, Frank's loud voice helps him find Red, but at the same time as his brothers happen upon the scene and a tie is declared.

The audience prepares for a battle when the Fairy Godmother and Evil Queen meet up in the forest, only they turn out to be old friends. They hug, then decide to leave the forest and go have a capuccino.

Red makes it to grandmother's house to find the Big Bad Wolf, played by Vince Virga, only he's there to help grandma with her gardening, not to eat her.

Red's two sisters are jealous that she has the attention of three princes, so they decide to write to Justin and Jason. Medium Purple Riding Hood, who wears glasses and studies all the time, thinks she is in love with Strong Prince Justin. Big Green Riding Hood, clad in a basketball uniform under her cape, professes her feelings for Wise Prince Jason.

The second task is set, with Red being guarded by a dragon and the princes looking for ways to rescue her.

Hired for the part of the dragon are Gerald, the front half of the dragon, played by Dominic Lorenz and Oswald, the back half, played by Jacob Sells. Oswald boasts that he has "17 years experience as the back half of a dragon," but Mr. Hood is not impressed.

"This is how you intend to keep the princes away from our daughter - two men in a dragon suit."

As they meet the dragon, each prince relies on his talents to rescue Red.

Strong Prince Justin wrestles the dragon, Wise Prince Justin advises the dragon that Red is rich in amino acids and would bother the dragon's digestion, while Loud Prince Frank yells to make the dragon leave. The Fairy Godmother declares another tie and says Red's hand will be decided on the third task.

Red is put into an enchanted sleep and the princes are challenged to awaken her.

Justin and Jason fail to wake her, but when Loud Frank says Red's name, she wakes up. Frank earns her hand and Jason and Justin tell their parents they have chosen Red's sisters after reading their letters.

The scenes were full of fun, laughs and surprises, especially for those who were expecting the traditional story of Red Riding Hood.

The cast list also included: Narrators: Lauren Althaus and Danielle Bebus, Sophie (lady in waiting): Jesse Hoffman, Emma (also waiting): Amanda Bean, Louise the UPS gal: Allison Gadbois, Evil Queen's henchman: Jaclyn Erdman, Enchanted Flower/Tree: Taylor Delzer, Clara and Kaitlyn (royal court): Claire Bakken and Katie Johnson, Enchanted Trees: Jenna Gale, Maddie Howard, Keesha Johnson, Amber Johnson, Kailee Carlson, Amanda Videen, Marissa Alliegro, Maddie Hallberg and Leah Foster.

Sound techs:  Ali Gerrick and Leah Bentfield. Prop/set team:  Megan Bouwens, Morgan Ford and Anna Goranson.

The play was directed by CLMS Communications and American Studies teacher Sally Lundholm, with production assistants Sara Sonnabend and Lynette Kutzke.
