Local students compete at Work Skills Day

Nearly 80 high school students from Chisago Lakes, North Branch and Rush City participated in the 30th annual Chisago County Work Skills Day Feb. 27.

The event is designed to challenge students to demonstrate their skills in Job Interviewing, Job Problem Solving and Job Application. All the students are enrolled in the Work Experience Program in their respective schools.

Managers and representatives from local businesses and service agencies served as judges, lending their expertise and time to make this event a realistic and rewarding experience for the students. Work Skills Day is the culmination of curriculum that the students work on for many months in their classrooms. This event is a "real life" application of classroom learning.

This year's keynote address was given by Tim McNiff, morning anchor for KARE 11 News. McNiff spoke to the students about his journey through high school and college.

The message he shared with the students included the need to feel passion for the work you choose to go into and be true to yourself and believe in yourself. He said that when you approach your career with those values in mind, opportunities will present themselves.
