She worked at the Parmly Residence, formerly the Bethesda Old Peoples Home, in Chisago City, from 1926 until her retirement 55 years later in 1981. She worked in a variety of jobs. She especially enjoyed working in the dining room adding her extra creations of flowers and design centerpieces for special monthly dinners. Phyllis' home was filled with many memorabilia and awards she received for her services.
After retirement, she continued as an active volunteer tending to the gardens, shrubs and trees at the Parmly Lakeview Apartments and Residence, and serving coffee and assisting in any way she could.
In 2002 she was the first recipient of the newly established annual award by the Parmly Board of Advisors for the outstanding volunteer from the entire Parmly campus who contributes to the tradition of giving back to others. She once described her volunteering as "that which you do because you like to give to others, but makes you feel good, too."
Phyllis is preceded in death by her sisters, Mildred Moller and Dorothy Britz.
She is survived by sister, Edith Johnson; cousins, nieces and nephews, and their families.
