This year's theme for DECA is "Xperience The Difference." The annual leadership conference gives students an opportunity to learn from professional speakers about the benefits of strong leadership, communication, teambuilding, and business skills. The conference was attended by over 1,300 students from over 30 high school DECA chapters throughout the state of Minnesota.
The opening session featured guest speaker Dave Anderson from Famous Dave's of America. He spoke about tackling the impossible, learning from adversity, and making a difference in your local community. His main focus was keeping optimistic and learning quickly in today's fast changing and challenging world.
Later in the evening students attended a two-hour leadership academy with students splitting into first or second year DECA experience levels. Professional speakers lead the format with interactive topics ranging from challenge management skills, teamwork, creativity, communication, and empowerment in a fun and interactive format for the student attendees. The highlight of the evening for most students was the conference dance in the ballroom with a sound, video, and light show.
The second day featured one more leadership academy workshop in the morning followed by the closing session in which the six newly elected 2007-8 State DECA officers were announced. Chisago Lakes also was recognized as one of the top three entrees in the annual DECA Television Commercial Contest.
Chisago Lakes DECA Advisor Tim Turnquist noted that all students that attended from Chisago Lakes had a great time meeting other students from across the state while dressing up like business professionals for two days. Special thanks to the following businesses for supporting DECA students by giving donations to the Chisago Lakes Chapter: Bruce Fagan and Associates, Goldstar Printworks, and Lindstrom Bakery.
