The Chisago Lakes girls' swimming and diving season came to end last Friday and Saturday at the Section 5A Meet in Elk River. The Wildcats finished fifth in the 12-team meet, but failed to qualify any individuals for the State Meet.

"We swam great on Friday," said Wildcat head coach Ed Wakefield. "We had 40 swims and 35 of them were season bests. We swam well on Saturday, also, but not quite what we hoped. We have always had a day in between prelims and finals and I think it always really helped us. This was the only year we have swum this format and it was not good for us. I think our girls where tired on Saturday."

Wakefield expressed disappointment when he said, "The one that was the hardest to take was Leah Secord. She cut six seconds on her 200 free on Friday and swam a state cut time, which put her fourth, going into finals (top two at finals go to state). In order to qualify by cut time you have to swim a state cut time at finals. She swam a little slower on Saturday and did not make the cut. Hard to take for a senior.

"Then, the 400 freestyle relay was second after prelims after cutting a ton of time. I was afraid that Becker was going to be faster at finals. They were and beat us out by a couple of seconds. I think this is the first time in 10 years we have not sent someone to state. Our new section is much faster than the old one," the coach continued.

"We where fifth out of 12 teams, which I figure is still pretty good. We where in third place with only three events left to go. It's pretty crazy you can be up that high with only a few events left and not send anyone to state.

"We had plenty of girls medal (top 8) and many of them earned multiple medals. We had a great season and our two seniors who are also our co-captains, Leah Secord and Andrea Olson will be dearly missed, not only for their great swimming ability, but for the spectacular leadership role that they have played," Wakefield concluded.
