Runners from seven schools competed in the Chisago Lakes Invitational Cross Country Meet Tuesday, September 25. Runner-friendly cool temperatures and cloud cover greeted the participants who ran a course on the athletic fields and wooded trails at Ki-Chi-Saga Park in Lindstrom.

The Wildcat girls and boys were each fourth in the 4K (girls) and 5K (boys) event. North Branch won the girls race and St. Anthony was the boys champion. Nathan Gieske led the Wildcats with a seventh place finish and Danielle Vitali was the first CL girl across the line. She came in fifth.

"Overall, I was very pleased with how we ran as a team. Both boys and girls were more competitive, really trying to catch the runners in front of them," said Wildcat head coach Ken Orwoll. "Brad Johnson had an outstanding race to finish 15th overall and second for the team. Seniors Nathan Gieske and Tom McGurk also ran well; consistent and competitive as usual.

"It was great to see Danielle (Vitali) have a great time on a challenging course. She never let up the entire race. Chelsea (Johnson), Makayla (Grote), Becca (Schmidt) and Laura (Eastman) all had good races to help the girl's team to their best finish of the year," Orwoll added.

The next action for the Wildcats is Tuesday, October 9 at the North Branch Golf Course against the Vikings. The first race starts at 4:00.

"This was a very difficult part of our schedule," said Viking head coach Brian Hasleiet. "We had three meets in less than a week and that isn't easy when you're talking about running cross country meets.

"I was really pleased how all of our kids handled a very difficult schedule. Our boys looked a lot more energized than on Saturday (at Milaca) and they really had a nice performance. The girls, once again, had a nice group of runners without any big gaps. You can't win cross country meets with one or two runners. You really need seven runners who are running very well, without big gaps between runners, and our girls did that again," Hasleiet concluded.

As the season starts to move toward conference and section tournaments, the Vikings will travel to Duluth to run in the Swain (Duluth East) Invitational Saturday, October 6, starting at 10 a.m.
