He was born June 26, 1951, and grew up on and continued to run the farm his ancestors settled when they emigrated from Sweden in 1869.
He was baptized and confirmed at Chisago Lake Lutheran Church where he also had served on the church council for seven years and currently had been in charge of the cemetery records for the last seven years.
He graduated from Taylors Falls High School in 1969 and attended UW-River Falls for a short time. He drove milk truck part-time until 1973, where upon the death of his father, he continued to help his mother and uncle farm and completely took over the business in 1976.
He also has served on the Franconia Town Board for 19 years, St. Croix Ambulance Board for 20 years, Chisago Lakes Fire Insurance Board for 19 years, Chisago County Farm Bureau for 30 years, bowled on Monday night church league for 36 years, and with his special connection with the North Pole made sure Santa Claus visited Shafer for 19 years.
June 24, 1989, he married Carol Olson, of Amery, Wis., and three beautiful daughters were born.
He is preceded in death by his parents Russell and Alice and his uncle Philip.
He is survived by his wife Carol; daughters: Johanna, Erin and Diane; sisters-in-law Lois Olson, of Amery, Wis., and Linda (Dr. Tim) Bont, of Fremont, MI; nephews: Jon (Linsey) Bont, of Indianapolis, IN; Jason and Jordan Bont and niece Jenna Bont, of Fremont, MI, plus many other family members and friends.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, at Chisago Lake Lutheran Church, Center City, with burial at Hillside Cemetery. Visitation 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, at Grandstrand Funeral Home, Lindstrom. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred.
