Grand Rapids 3, NB 2

The tenth-seeded Vikings led during much of their opening-round Section 7A playoff match against Grand Rapids. But, a goal late in the game gave the Thunderhawks a 3-2 victory over the Vikings Thursday, October 11 at Grand Rapids. The loss ended the Vikings' season.

Not surprisingly, sophomore Brian Grand had a hand in both Viking goals. He scored the first by taking a pass from freshman Tony Ceroll, dribbling through several Thunderhawk defenders and finding the net on a great shot. Later in the match, junior Tom Mork scored by crashing the net on a loose ball. Grand was credited with an assist on the goal.

The Vikings led 2-1 for most of the match. Grand Rapids eventually tied the game at 2-2. Late in the match, a Thunderhawk shot hit the crossbar and went straight down. The sideline referee ruled that the ball hit the ground across the goal line and awarded a goal to Grand Rapids. That goal held up, sending the Vikings down to a 3-2 defeat.

"Our team played very well," said Wildcat head coach Brad Gustafson. "I could not be prouder. I share our team's disappointment that the season is over, but also recognize the great strides we made this season. I'm honored to be associated with our team and want North Branch to know what a classy group of soccer players they have representing them."
