The North Branch Viking football woes continued Friday, October 12 at Columbia Heights. The Hylanders celebrated their homecoming by beating NB 26-8 in the final North Suburban Conference game for the Vikings. After the victory, the Hylanders stand at 3-4 for the season, while the Vikings are 0-7.

"The first half wasn't real productive," said second-year head coach Dave Eyre. The Hylanders scored on the first possession of the game and added three more scores in the second quarter to take a 26-0 halftime lead.

"After they scored on the first drive, we played tough D the whole game," Eyre commented. "Jeremy Lacina, Dillon Kost, coming back from and injury, Mike Johnson, Alex Sundly, Eric Sampson and Dan Schoess really played well on the defensive side for us." Kost was in on 10 tackles (4 tackles/6assists) to lead the Vikings. Sundly (4t/5a), Lacina (3t/6a) and Cody Kosman (5t/3a) were also important to the defensive effort.

"However, offensively we couldn't put anything together. In the second half, we ran the ball fairly decent, but turnovers (four interceptions and one fumble lost) killed our drives," Eyre added.

On the positive side, the Vikings held the Hylanders scoreless in the second half and, after a snap sailed over the Heights punter's outstretched arms, added a touchdown and two-point conversion in the fourth quarter. Sam Kalkbrenner crossed the goal line from six yards out and grabbed a pass from quarterback Cole Wilcoxen to put two points in the Vikings' column.

"We saw some real positive things out there," Eyre commented. "The kids were really jacked up."

Junior Chad Anderson led the Viking runners with 75 yards in 14 attempts and Kalkbrenner gained 17 yards on 4 carries. Wilcoxen was 5 for 21 for 46 yards passing. Kalkbrenner was his leading receiver (3 catches for 31 yards) and Kirk Dahle caught one pass for 10 yards.
