CL girls' soccer team rebounds after loss to beat Concordia Academy
St. Croix Lutheran scored with seven minutes remaining to break a scoreless tie on its way to a 2-0 win over the Wildcats Monday, September 17 in West St. Paul.
St. Croix got on the board with a well-executed corner kick in the 73rd minute. The Wildcats knocked the ball into their own net with three minutes remaining for a goal to seal the win for St. Croix. "This was another even match-up for us," said Wildcat head coach Brett Kjos. "We had some good opportunities, but didn't capitalize on them.
"The defense played another good game tonight. Sam Genung and Lindsey Fowler-Wacholz played especially well and have been working well together this season. When one moves up to play the ball, the other one drops back to cover for her. They each have a good idea of what they need to do, and they play with more confidence knowing their teammate has their back," Kjos added.
CL 2, Concordia Academy 0
Hannah Cadry got the Wildcats on the board just two minutes in the game and added another goal later in the first half. Her scoring helped the Wildcats beat Concordia Academy 2-0 Saturday, September 22 at Chisago Lakes.
The Wildcats made the first goal look easy. Freshman Cassie Trandahl carried the ball into the box from the left side and shot toward the left corner. The Concordia goalie managed to get a hand on it. But she deflected it right to Cadry, standing all alone in the right side of the box five yards from the net. Cadry knocked the ball into the open net to give the Wildcats the early lead.
The Wildcats' second goal came with just four minutes left in the first half and was a textbook example of a well-executed play. Carrying the ball down the right-center part of the field, Tara Wilson sent a nearly perfect through-ball ahead for Cadry. Cadry took the ball in stride and, with a defender nearly hugging her from the left side and the goalie charging toward her, rocketed a wicked 25-yard shot over the goalie's head and into the left side of the net.
The Wildcat defense made the 2-0 lead hold for the rest of the game, allowing a few harmless shots as they locked up their second win in their last three games. Goalie Lisa Schommer earned her fourth shutout of the season.
"To score a goal that early was outstanding," said coach Kjos. "We knew this game was going to be pretty even, so it was nice to be able to go out and play with a lead right off the bat. That was only the second time we've beaten them in the seven times we've played over the years. Hannah was in the right place at the right time for that first goal. Last year, she was one of our forwards. This year, we moved her to midfield and she's made the transition successfully."
The Wildcats were scheduled to travel to Forest Lake Monday, September 24 and then play four conference games in a row: (home) Benilde-St. Margaret's Tuesday, September 25; (home) Irondale, tonight, Thursday, September 27 at 7 p.m.; (away) St. Louis Park Saturday, September 29, 3 p.m.; and (away) Columbia Heights Tuesday, October 2 at 5 p.m.
