CLHS art student designs logo for Chisago Lakes Family Center
Family Center staff, representatives and advisory council members had the difficult task of choosing a design from 10 talented finalist pieces completed by students in Marlene Biondo's Design Basics class at CLHS.
In the end, junior Leah Hawthorne's design with four colorful, youthful figures inside a circle with the words "Chisago Lakes Family Center" won out.
It will now be featured on all Family Center materials, and has already been "introduced" to the public on a large banner that was displayed at the Home Show last month.
The design came about as a collaborative effort between Family Center Director Karen Manske and Biondo.
"The Family Center hasn't really had a logo of its own, so our parent advisory council decided to try to have one developed," Manske said.
She talked with Biondo, who felt that the project was perfect for the Design Basics class. Students also complete projects in the class such as box designs, packaging, lettering and an emphasis on typography.
Hawthorne said she did a lot of research on logo design at the school's media center, but it still took a while to develop her logo idea.
"I originally had the heads of the figures pointing toward the middle of the circle, but that didn't look good, so Ms. Biondo helped me switch them around," she said.
Once students had completed their designs, they made presentations to Manske and staff about their creations.
Hawthorne's original design was done in black and white, leaving the color choices for the four figures up to the Family Center. Staff chose a rainbow of primary colors - green, red, yellow and blue. Biondo likes that they chose different colors for the figures, because it can represent diversity and symbolize togetherness.
Hawthorne then produced a color copy of the logo and painted the figures onto the banner.
She is pleased that the design will be used by the Family Center, and looks forward to Design Basics II, which Biondo hopes to add to the art curriculum next year.
"We're living in a very visual world, so it's important to have visual design," Biondo said.
She hopes to offer the Design Basics II class for college credit through Century College.
As for the other finalists, Biondo said their drawings will be kept by Family Center staff to possibly use in the future for other promotional materials.
"The students all did a great job on this project," Biondo added.
Wyoming Mills helped by donating the lettering and offering a discounted price on the banner.
