The Viking track season began at a four-team indoor meet at the University of Minnesota Friday, March 28.

No team scores were kept in the event, hosted by Chisago Lakes, but the Viking girls picked up seven first places finishes and three seconds. The North Branch boys collected four firsts and three runner-up spots in the 16-event meet.

Sophomore Sara Swanson led the Viking attack by winning the 60 meter dash (8.04) and the 200 meter dash (27.9). Senior Kristen Robatcek's 4'10" high jump took first place. Sophomore Onalee Yousey's 10.29 in the 60 meter hurdles was also good for a first place finish.

Two freshman girls also placed first. Sadie Kolke was first in the 400 dash (66.6 seconds) and classmate Shayna Gray won the 1000 meter run in 3:30.2. The seventh Viking win was in the 4 x 800 meter relay. Freshman Kendra Norman, sophomores Haley Hasleiet and Miranda Charley and junior Briana Berthiaume combined for a time of 10.35:32 time.

Senior Jerad Grams, sophomore Joe Klun and freshman Anthony Ceroll were each responsible for parts of two Viking first place finishes. Grams won the 60 in 6.92 and combined with Klun, Ceroll and senior Dillon Kost to finish the 4 x 200 relay in 1:40.7.

Ceroll showed his versatility winning the long jump by flying 18'10" from the board. Klun, juniors Zach Good and Ryan Norman and senior Matt Kleven won the 4 x 800 relay in eight minutes, 57 seconds.

"They didn't keep score for this meet, but it was good to get our kids on the track after three weeks of practice to get some times and distances on them," said Viking head coach Brian Hasleiet. "It's been difficult practicing field events, so this was the first time we've even been able to work on some of our events.

"I was very impressed with how good our distance runners looked. We also had a lot of freshmen and people out for the first time who competed very well. We had a very good start to our season on Friday," the coach commented.

Barring weather-driven schedule changes, the next Viking meet will be at home against Irondale and Fridley Thursday, April 10. They follow that with another home event. Chisago Lakes will travel to North Branch Tuesday, April 15. The April 10 meet begins at 4:00. The starters pistol is scheduled to fire at 4:15 April 15.
