All eyes were on the sky over Lakeside School last week, as a Blackhawk helicopter made its landing at the school's sports field alongside Highway 8 in Chisago City. About 75 participants in the annual summer safety camp had just finished their bike safety rodeo and CPR lessons and they were enthralled by the approaching Blackhawk. Under the reverberating roar of the landing helicopter few kids were paying attention to a couple dozen boxes of freshly delivered pizza awaiting the lunchtime whistle.

The helicopter pilot spent time taking questions from the Safety Camp kids and they got an up-close look at the multi-million dollar machine. (See photo).

In smaller groups-- kids also were clocked by Deputy Chief of Lakes Area Police Bill Schlumbohm (photo) on the bike course, where they learned hand signals and proper riding techniques. A second small group practices CPR technique with Heather Jarvis of the ambulance/rescue service.

Participants also had sessions at the community pool and saw Taylors Falls firefighters demonstrated the jaws-of-life extrication tool.

The three-day Safety Camp is offered each summer through a cooperative effort of local healthcare provider Fairview, Chisago Lakes Dist. Community Education, police and sheriff's department and emergency responders. Safety skills and awareness are taught and reinforced at age-appropriate levels.
