Dr. and Mrs. Sprain hope you can join them at Ki-Chi-Saga Days parade
Marlowe worked as a dentist in the area from the early 60's until his retirement in 1998. Lois, too retired in 1998 after a long career in education that included 25 years teaching fifth grade at the Lakeside School.
Marlowe is a native of Chisago, and met Lois - a native of Robbinsdale, when they were students at Gustavus Adolphus College.
From Gustavus, after Marlowe served as a lieutenant in the Marines for 18 months in Korea, Lois taught kindergarten for four years in Wauwatosa,Wis., while Marlowe attended and completed dental school at Marquette.
The couple moved to California where Marlowe completed his first year residency at a clinic in Oakland. The Sprains returned to Minnesota and the Chisago area in 1966 when Marlowe got a call from the hometown dentist he had seen as a child - Dr. Arthur (A.W.) Edman. Dr. Edman said he was retiring and asked Marlowe to consider taking over the practice. Marlowe began his career in Chisago City in offices located south across Railroad Avenue from the city's Post Office; but most of his career he was in the dental clinic below what is now the Fairview Chisago Lakes Clinic.
The Sprains have been active at Zion Lutheran Church in Chisago City and elsewhere throughout the community. Marlowe has served on Zion's congregational council and both he and Lois have held leadership roles in the Sunday School Program. Marlowe has been a Chisago City Council member and School Board member, and served as an election judge.
His involvement with youth through the years has included coaching in t-ball and hockey programs. Lois' part in teaching youth and working with them for many years, included co-founding a Chess Club for Lakeside students, which she notes, is still a popular program there.
Marlowe and Lois raised three children, Vikki, Shelly and Mike, and they have seven grandchildren.
The Ki-Chi-Saga Days parade is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24.
