Green-and-gold grapplers finish busy week before break with a 3-3 mark
Wildcat head coach Shawn Frederixon was disappointed in his team's loss to Hinckley-Finlayson. "We came out flat and let them dictate what was going to happen," said Frederixon. "It was a good learning experience for our kids. You have to be ready to go for every match and we sure weren't ready for that one."
The Wildcats trailed Cooper by just one point going into the heavyweight match, but came up short as they lost that matchup to give Cooper a 36-29 win. Despite the loss, Frederixon was much happier with his team's increased level of effort. "Cooper has ten seniors," he said. "They're a pretty tough bunch and I thought we wrestled well as a team. It was a drastic change from what we saw on Tuesday. The guys battled to the end. Two of our guys, Tyler McConville at 119 and Riley Myers at 160, lost close matches to state entrants from last year."
Nothing memorable came out of the Wildcats' 66-18 drubbing of undermanned Washburn. Frederixon said "Washburn's only wins came by forfeit. We did what we were supposed to do against them." The 50-24 win over Rush City included six forfeit wins for the Wildcats. The Wildcats started the match off with a bang as Quade Zupko (103) pinned his opponent just 20 seconds into the match. "Quade got us off to a good start against Rush City," said Frederixon. "They're a little down in numbers this year, which led to forfeit wins for us in six of our last seven individual matches."
Against Goodhue, wins by Quade Zupko (103), Pao Thao (119) and Tyler McConville (125) gave the Wildcats an early 13-6 lead. After two forfeits and a pin, the Wildcats fell behind 24-13. Major decisions by Travis Kammerer (145) and Riley Myers tightened the score to 24-21. Goodhue pins at 160 and 171 stretched their lead to 36-21. The Wildcats continued to hang tough, though. A win by Clay Olson at 189 and a pin by Jake Nase at 215 cut the Goodhue lead to 36-30. But Goodhue got a pin in the heavyweight match to make the final score Goodhue 42, Chisago Lakes 30. "That was a tight one could have gone either way," said Frederixon. "We lost a couple of close ones. They're a good team and that was really a fun match."
The Wildcats' 53-27 win over St. Croix falls was highlighted by Tyler McConville's pin at 119 in just 33 seconds over St. Croix Falls' Dan Pathelbridge. "We wrestled hard and pulled away at the end," said Frederixon. "But they're a good program with a young team. It's good to take advantage of that now."
