The Wildcats couldn't keep up with the high-scoring St. Francis Fighting Saints Friday, February 1. at CLHS, when the 17-2 Saints beat Chisago Lakes 80-55. The next day, in a 3 p.m. game, the Wildcats lost a non-conference match-up at Forest Lake. The 13-8 Rangers beat CL 84-51

The Saints jumped out to an early 18-8 lead. To "refocus," Wildcat head coach Craig Walker called a timeout. "We were not patient in our offense and were taking poor shots early," Walker said. "Our game plan was to move the ball against their zone and get good looks at the basket. We were not reversing the ball quickly enough and were not moving into open areas of their zone.

"After that timeout, we stayed close and trailed by 13 at halftime. Unfortunately, our shooting was not here tonight. We were shooting near 40 percent as a team, which is pretty good. But, tonight our shots were not falling in the first half and then we started to take poor shots in the second half as their lead grew.

"St. Francis is a good shooting and defensive team. But, we did hang around in this one for a while, until our fouls caught up to us in the second half. They put pressure on you to move your feet and play good team defense and, just like our first game, both teams went to the foul line a lot," Walker concluded.

CL at Forest Lake

"The next afternoon wasn't any easier," coach Walker commented. The Wildcats took an early lead, but couldn't maintain it against the taller Rangers. "We were up early against their seniors who started on their senior night. But, once the two junior posts came in, our lead quickly disappeared.

"Forest Lake creates match-up problems for many teams. They start 6'1 and 6'4 post players and their plan is to get the ball inside to those post players. The taller player wasn't much of a factor, but we couldn't stop Gina Lange (19 points, 10 rebounds), the 6'1 player. We packed it in defensively, but they hit some shots from the outside and we had to come out on them to defend. Once that happened, more space was created on the inside, and Lange went to work on our posts," Walker explained.
